Error - 'Constant file can not be read' or 'constant file cannot be opened'

For help when you have an error when trying to log onto your Data Capture terminals.

Overview

When trying to log onto your Data Capture terminals, you may be receiving these error messages similar to the following:

'Constant File can not be read'

Another error message is:

'Constant file cannot be opened'


What do the errors mean, and how do I fix them?

Occasionally, a user or users may receive the error '- Constant file cannot be opened.' There are multiple reasons why this could occur, and there are several suggestions below which users can use to try to resolve the issue.

  1. Check with the IT department if any changes have occurred before the error started. For example:

    1. Has a new Firewall/Antivirus been installed? If so, try disabling it and accessing the software again.

    2. Have any changes been made to an existing Firewall/Antivirus? If so, try disabling it and accessing the software again.

    3. Have any Windows updates been installed? If so, try rolling back and accessing the software again.

  2. Re-run Client Setup on the Affected Machine

    1. Right-Click the FactoryMaster icon and click Open file location.

    2. Go back two directories, which should take the user to the FMAST10 or FMAST11 folder.

    3. Open ClientSetup.

    4. Run the 'ClientSetup' application.

    5. Click Install.

    6. Once the process is completed, try opening the FactoryMaster software again.

  3. Restart the SQL Server FactoryMaster Service (Needs to be done on SQL Server)

    1. From the Desktop, open the Start menu.

    2. Type 'Services' and run 'Services.msc'.

    3. Navigate to the 'SQL Server (Your database)' entry.

    4. Restart the service.

    5. Try opening the FactoryMaster software again.

  4. Perform a Backup

    1. Right-Click the FactoryMaster icon and click Open file location.

    2. Go back two directories, which should take the user to the FMAST10 or FMAST11 folder.

    3. Open ClientSetup.

    4. Open Other.

    5. Run the 'SQLUtils' application.

    6. Select 'Backup' and click Go.

    7. Once the process is completed, try opening the FactoryMaster software again.

  5. Complete a Copy Live to Play

    1. Right-Click the FactoryMaster icon and click Open file location.

    2. Go back two directories, which should take the user to the FMAST10 or FMAST11 folder.

    3. Open ClientSetup.

    4. Open Other.

    5. Run the 'SQLUtils' application.

    6. Select 'Copy Live to Play' and click Go.

    7. Once the process is completed, try opening the FactoryMaster software again.

  6. Please check the local file path, e.g. C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\FMClient.FMAST12
    a. within the play.ini, there should be:- ConstFile =%MAGIC%SUPPORT\mgconstw.eng

  7. Check the INI file in the roaming folder:- C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\FMClient.TEST_RESTRICTED\live.ini

    • a. There should be a reference to the mgconstw file. Change the file name to one that exists.

    • b. The files should be here:C:\ProgramData\FMClient.FMAST12\Live\XPA\Support
